Reeks is the subject of this week’s Spotlight on a Villager.
One of the true heroes of Tubberfeck, Bushkill “Reeks” MacGillycuddy is the third generation proprietor of MacGillycuddy’s Roadhouse Pub and Carvery. Located at the edge of Easkey Bog, MacGillycuddy’s has long provided a cozy fire, a fair pint, and cheese toastie to the weary traveler.
The Roadhouse has been in the possession of the MacGillycuddy clan for more than 100 years. Like the Sons of Liberty meeting in the Green Dragon Tavern to plot the Boston Tea Party, MacGillycuddy’s hosted the founders of the Tour de Bog that blustery and fateful day in 1925 and plays host to the commemorative race each year from its adjacent meadow, carpark and makeshift summer beer garden.
As is custom in West Sligo, Reeks’ older brother will inherit the MacGillycuddy Farm, his next older brother is already in Seminary, which means Reeks, as the third son, is left to run the family business, a position to which he is well suited.
Genetic fortune aside, Reeks earned his honor as “Hero of the Realm” during the Great Quarantine by standing constant vigil at the back door of MacGillycuddy’s and serving the odd sneaky pint to the desperate punters of Tubberfeck while keeping a weather eye to the horizon for the Garda.
We raise our illicit refreshments to you, Reeks MacGillycuddy. Hazah!
